High Quality education with the flexibility you need!
The Academy of Science & Discovery enjoys a 12 acre playground as part of the Science and Discovery Center. The Academy uses The ScienceStart! curriculum which meets standards for early childhood practice as outlined by the National Council for the Teaching of Mathematics, the National Council for Teachers of English, the International Reading Association, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Academy of Science and Discovery provides experiences for preschool students to be ready to master the skills required by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Common Core State Standards (CCSS) during their kindergarten year.
There are CCSS for many academic disciplines. An example of the basic CCSS categories for mathematics at the kindergarten level require young children to begin to understand:
Counting and Cardinality
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Measurement and Data
The Academy of Science and Discovery experience will involve preschoolers in hands-on games and activities during which they learn to notice and attend to these concepts at their level of understanding. Becoming aware of shapes and numbers, of like and unlike items, and learning to measure and keep simple charts are naturally interesting things for very young children to do. For instance, basic algebraic thinking can be introduced with large colorful overlays that young children enjoy manipulating. Set theory and geometry can be taught with hula hoops and colored blocks of various shapes. Such activities are actively planned and taught at the Academy of Science and Discovery to prepare our pre-kindergarteners for kindergarten.
The Academy program is highly accountable to parents, the county and the state. Developmental and academic achievement testing will be administered upon admission, at regular intervals and upon completion of the Academy to assess kindergarten readiness. HighReach research-validated assessment will be utilized to evaluate key aspects of program quality including:
The learning environment
Adult child interaction
Curriculum planning and assessment
Staff qualifications and development
The ultimate goal is for the Academy to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) The accreditation process can only begin after one year of successful operation so we anticipate implementing that process at the end of this school year.
All eligible four-year-olds are entitled to participate in one of the VPK program options. The VPK program is FREE for all four-year-olds born on or before September 1 each year who reside in Florida.
